On April 6, 2020 a statewide temporary Emergency Bail Schedule was adopted by the Judicial Council to handle criminal offenses during the state of emergency related to the COVID-19 global health pandemic. This statewide temporary Emergency Bail Schedule set bail for most misdemeanor and felony offenses at $0, except for certain crimes of violence and higher-level felonies that were specifically excepted. This statewide Emergency Bail Schedule set by the Judicial Council expired on June 20, 2020.
On June 19, 2020, Presiding Judge Kevin Brazile of the Los Angeles County Superior Court announced that the Court’s Executive Committee approved its own temporary emergency bail schedule which took effect at 5p.m. on June 20, 2020. This temporary emergency zero bail schedule mirrors the prior schedule announced by the Judicial Council with the exception that “bail for individuals re-arrested during the state of emergency shall be set pursuant to the applicable non-emergency 2020 Infractions & Misdemeanors Bail Schedule, and 2020 Felony Bail Schedule.”
This newly enacted temporary emergency zero bail schedule will remain in effect in Los Angeles County until further notice.
